The Wages for Housework Campaign has been advocating for paid housework since the 1970s. Despite this seemingly unachievable goal, many victories can be attributed to the campaign’s demands, like child benefits and the Marital Rape Law introduced in 1992.
This weeks Gunning press printmaker is the incredibly talented Alexandra who runs her business Moatzart. Alexandra is a passionate printmaker who rekindled her love for printmaking during the pandemic and has been hooked since.
I love stories, myth and folklore, and a lot of my work is very illustrative. Ultimately, people are and will always be my main inspiration.
MEET THE MAKER: MOATZART
I start by sketching out a composition straight on the lino. I sketch this out mainly to see where everything goes, but I don’t do this in a lot of detail regarding how every element or character will look. I then start carving, and that’s when I make my decisions, I love “listening” to the lino block for this.

This week we sat down for a chat with the brilliant Alexandra, aka Moatzart. Her Instagram videos of the linocutting process have had us spellbound, and we couldn't wait to get to know the artist behind the knife.
they are dreaming collection
The medium of linocut allows large intricate designs and scenes, and this is what I was used to doing, But the medium also allows for making smaller stamp-like figures, and I was very inspired by the idea of making multiple smaller blocks, and bringing in my collage practice to printmaking.

Alexandra Motiu has recently released a collection of stickers based on her two most popular collections of prints; Away With the Circus and They Are Dreaming.
moatzart printmaking practice
Influenced by Dadaism and Surrealism, her work is revelatory of internal struggles through the use of disturbing imagery, the grotesque and carnivalesque. Alexandra’s prints have been described as “very well contained madness“.

fundraising for the gallery
Alex is a printmaker and makes beautiful linoprints. She has very kindly decided to donate 10% of proceeds from sales of her wonderful Christmas Cards and Away with the Circus series to Fabrica this December.

This piece relates to politics. The viewer puts their head and hands through a hole in a chalkboard, which visitors are invited to draw on, they subsequently become part of the artwork If you just write about political events, but do not participate in them, then you become part of the problem, not the solution.
quiet revelations project
My biggest revelation has been coming back to making art, and starting my own business of selling my work. I realised that all my reasons for postponing this were excuses, and I also had extra time on my hands.
